Call for proposals: understanding ‘decolonisation’ through illustration

The University of Exeter has recently undertaken an institution-wide collaborative project to produce a Decolonisation Toolkit, and are looking to commission a set of illustrations and/or short animations to help provide a visual representation of the term ‘decolonisation’ and the ideas within the toolkit.

The University of Exeter has recently undertaken an institution-wide collaborative project to produce a Decolonisation Toolkit. The resource is designed to support staff and students in decolonising their approaches to teaching and learning, ultimately leading to a more equitable education experience. The toolkit has been developed by Riadh Ghemmour, Fatuma Mohaumd, Tina Verhaeghe, and Caitlin Kight.

While the University have tried to provide a multimedia experience, nevertheless they have a huge number of written resources. This is particularly challenging when discussing complex and dense ideas such as the definition of ‘decolonisation’ and associated terms and their application.

To address this, they are looking to commission a set of illustrations and/or short animations to achieve the following goals:

  • Provide a visual representation / explanation / exploration of the term ‘decolonisation’
  • Provide creative renderings of ideas such as (but not limited to – additional suggestions welcome): Positionality; Intersectionality; Plurality; Marginalisation; Minoritisation; Inclusivity; Social justice

The artist would have full access to the Decolonisation Toolkit (which is hosted on SharePoint and is available only to those with a University of Exeter login) while preparing the pieces; this will allow them to understand the wider context in which their work would be sitting and to ensure they feel comfortable with collaborating on the project. By way of introduction to the resource, a screenshot of the landing page is provided as an appendix to this brief, along with an article in which it describes the definition of ‘decolonising the curriculum’ reached through a collaborative conversation across the university community.

There is an aim for the finer details of this commission to be reached through discussion with the appointed artist(s). The exact number of works, location in the toolkit, and selected ideas/themes to be explored are to be agreed post-interview. The Toolkit space can accommodate a range of formats and artists would be welcome to include an accompanying artist statement to be posted alongside the work. While the University would host the pieces within the Toolkit, they would recognise that it remains the artist’s intellectual property and may be used elsewhere as the artist sees fit.

Budget: up to £3,000 and the final pieces must be completed and submitted by Tuesday 12th July 2022. During the commission period,  anticipated 1-2 opportunities to feed back on your work-in-progress.

Recruitment: The University aims at all times to recruit the person who is most suited to the job, and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds – people of all genders, sexual orientations, ages, nationalities, religions, and beliefs. However, they particularly encourage applications from people of colour, due to under-representation in the arts and higher education sectors.

  • your CV
  • a brief statement (up to one side of A4) that summarises your interest in this commission, any relevant experience, and an estimate of the number of pieces you would make within the budget/timeframe
  • 4-6 examples of your illustration/animation work (either website links or attached files)

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview via Zoom during the first week of May. The selection panel will comprise key contributors to the Toolkit project (exact membership will depend on scheduling and availability).
