Changing Tunes wins Koestler awards

Prisoners in HMP Bronzefield, facilitated by Changing Tunes, won the Platinum Koestler award in the choral music category for 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)'.

This success accompanies the Silver Koestler award won in Eastwood Park by a group of women prisoners who were also facilitated and recorded by a Changing Tunes representative.

Changing Tunes is a relationship-based charity that uses music to aid the rehabilitation of prisoners and ex-prisoners. Having run for over 15 years, it believes that the common purpose of making music creates an environment for prisoners to improve self-esteem, build healthy relationships, and engage in an activity where hard work and perseverance brings rewards. Ex-prisoners who have actively participated in the Changing Tunes programme have a re-offending rate of less than 15 per cent, compared to a national average of 61 per cent.

Musician's in Residence work on behalf of Changing Tunes with the prisoners to aid in the creation of the music. The musician's behind the newest successes are Nancy Parker and Fran Key.

The PHF's Social Justice programme supports Changing Tunes with a grant of £226,707 over three years awarded in 2011/12, helping the charity to develop its innovative project and more recently funding its expansion into 70 per cent of UK prisons.

The Koestler awards are hosted by the Koestler Trust, a UK based prison arts charity. Now 50 years old, the awards aim to provide a positive goal towards which inmates can strive, a means of acquiring new skills, an outlet for creative energies and emotions, a recognition of achievements and an encouragement to continue in the arts and education.
