I am a Bristol-based movement artist. I lead projects for people of various ages and abilities using movement for health, wellbeing, creativity and performance.

My background is in somatic and non-stylised movement. In contrast to codified dance styles, somatic movement focusses on the idea of learning something about oneself through movement. Guided imagery and movement explorations encourage participants to 'listen to' their bodies, to bring awareness to sensations and feelings. The emphasis is on experiencing movement as a process that integrates body, emotions and mind for a greater sense of connection and vitality.

One of my current interests is the combination of movement and art. In my sessions we progress from focussing on our breath and easing into our bodies to creative movement explorations. We then express our movement experiences in drawing, making and writing. These creative visualisations form the base for individual reflection and sharing within the group.

I use this approach in Soul Dances*, sessions for people experiencing mental health problems, anxiety and depression. Participants say they
- access the creativity of the sessions easily
- enjoy moving to music
- feel comfortable, not worrying about what they can or cannot do
- are able to relax and to put away mental distractions
- feel more grounded and authentic: 'this is me'
- appreciate drawing as a great thought provoking exercise
- love using the oil pastels
- have gained confidence in daily life
- leave feeling better, feeling stronger in body and mind.
