Effective Facilitation with Hard to Reach Adults

22nd & 23rd Feb 2018, 11am - 5pm

This two-day course will explore good practice in theatre facilitation when working with hard to reach adults. It will introduce ideas on how to engage reluctant participants, techniques for dealing with conflict, ready tested exercises and activities that work well in settings for hard to reach adults and the different types of outcomes that can be expected. 




Abi Horsfield is Collective Encounters’ Transitions Director. Abi is a community theatre/arts professional with over 30 years experience of theatre facilitation, performance and project management. Her long career has seen her deliver workshops across 300 projects in 27 challenging countries such as Ghana, Thailand, Uzbekistan, the Philippines and Nigeria.


On the evening of Thursday 22nd February you will attend a performance with an adult participatory theatre group, and on the final afternoon you will have the opportunity to facilitate exercises with adults from Collective Encounters’ Transitions programme

The course will enable participants to:

  • Develop skills, knowledge and effectiveness of the facilitator role.
  • Manage and resolve conflict in a range of situations.
  • Develop plans for creative sessions with hard to reach adults.
  • Understand the role of evaluation, and prepare plans for evaluating facilitated session with hard to reach adults
  • Develop their own personal qualities as an effective facilitator.
  • Explore a toolkit of practical exercises and activities that work well with hard to reach adults.



This two-day course will use a range of techniques to develop participants knowledge, skills and understanding including presentations, model workshops, paper-based resources, question and answers and group discussion.
