AHSW's Director and Trustees reflect on various aspects of arts, health and wellbeing.

Director’s Monthly Reflection

This month AHSW Director Alex Coulter talks about arts and health sector events to watch out for!

I am pleased to announce tickets are now available for our Culture Health and Wellbeing International Conference (CHW21) in June, three jam-packed days with more than 90 presentations, workshops, films and performances from across the globe. I have just heard from Australian artist, Vic McEwan, that he can join us to speak about his work with the Sydney Facial Nerve Clinic. Some of you may have heard Vic’s talk with Clive Parkinson at the 2017 conference about The Longest Heartbeat, an extraordinary and extraordinarily moving project. I’m excited about the country panels we are planning, guest curated by colleagues in Nigeria, Singapore, Netherlands, Italy, Finland, USA and New Zealand. I have also been discussing the Hong Kong panel with the Hong Kong Foundation and also look forward to speaking with Yutaka Moriguchi about the Japan panel. We will be recording most of the live sessions and they will be available to delegates during and after the conference. Managing multiple time zones is quite challenging!

As part of the International Conference we are running a Pay It Forward Scheme which offers Arts in Medicine Fellows in Africa free delegate places to the Conference. The Arts in Medicine fellowship  artsinmedicinefellowship.org is currently leading the largest arts in health network on the continent of Africa with 13 countries represented and over 400 members. Offering Fellows free delegate spaces to the conference is a valuable opportunity for Fellows who are working in remote parts of Africa to engage with people who are in need of healing in the context of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure health lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Attendees to the conference can top up their ticket by adding the £50 ‘Pay-It-Forward Top Up’ to their Basket on checkout. This extra £50 will enable us to support the attendance of Arts in Medicine Fellows.

On the subject of conferences, don’t forget our International Conference is part of a larger series of events in Spring/Summer 2021. Across spring and summer 2021, Arts & Health South West, the Culture, Health & Wellbeing Alliance, and London Arts in Health Forum are coming together with many other partners to stage a series of events celebrating the power of creativity and culture to transform our health and wellbeing including:

21-23 April 2021: A Culture of Care: CHWA National Conference

17-24 May 2021: Creativity & Wellbeing Week – A National Festival

21-23 June June 2021: Culture, Health and Wellbeing International Conference

National News

The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) has opened the nomination process for its annual Health & Wellbeing Awards. The awards include a category for Arts & Health, to recognise organisations whose work has furthered the contribution of the creative arts to health and wellbeing, so a great opportunity to gain recognition for work at a national level. They are free to enter to organisations based in the UK and anyone nominated will receive two tickets to the ceremony taking place in London in October 2021. The deadline is 22nd April.

Keep well,

Alex
