The Somerford Wellbeing Project

A film project intended to inform the provision of arts activites aimed at supporting wellbeing in Somerford, Christchurch. Project report now available.

The film was made by young people from Somerford in Christchurch, Dorset, facilitated by film makers Matt Gillett and Angie Belcher from Bad Chicken Productions and supported by Christchurch Activities for Young People (CAYP).

Mitchell Norwood, Jamie Saunders, Shannon Saunders and Sophie Stuart were the core team that worked with the film makers for eight sessions in April and May 2015. Another seven young people were involved in interviewing the artists, participating and being interviewed in the film. The young film makers interviewed professionals working in Somerford, parents and other members of the public to find what it is like to live in Somerford and what could be done to improve people’s wellbeing.

The project is intended to inform future plans for providing more arts activities aimed at supporting wellbeing in Somerford. Arts & Health South West is in discussion with Christchurch Borough Council, Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group and Dorset County Council about next steps.

On May 31st 2015 the film was shown to members of the community and their feedback was added to the evaluation of the project. Bournemouth University is working on a full evaluation of the process, partnership working and the outcomes for the young people in order to inform future plans. The project was conceived as an ‘asset-based’ approach to arts, health and wellbeing. This means working with local people to support the positive initiatives already being developed within their community.
