Arts Council to make £19m of cuts in 2010 -11

Arts Council England has responded to the news of a £19 million reduction in its funding from the DCMS.

A statement on 24th May from Dame Liz Forgan, Chair of Arts Council England said:

"We all knew this year would be tough. We do not understand why we have received a higher percentage cut than other DCMS funded bodies…

 “We will do our utmost to minimise the impact on the frontline but we cannot guarantee that there will be no effect…'

Phil Gibby, Regional Director for Arts Council England, South West issued a further statement on 27th May saying:

‘We are now in discussion with the DCMS about the possibility of using [our reserves] in order to mitigate the reductions to our budget…which - in common with museums and other DCMS bodies - the Department has prevented us from accessing to date…

‘We cannot be certain at this stage that the 2010/11 budgets to the organisations we fund can be totally protected…. 

‘It would…be impossible to meet a cut of this size from running costs alone…

‘Our priority now is to…….. make and communicate our decisions as quickly as possible.’
